Tour du Mont Blanc: August 2011

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) has to its name the title of most popular long distance walk in Europe. Over 10,000 people attempt the route each year and many of those who have completed the circuit argue that it is one of the greatest walks in the world.

The circular route, which can be walked either clockwise or anti-clockwise, winds its way through valleys and over mountain passes of France, Italy and Switzerland with the impressive and dramatic vista of Mount Blanc (4807m) commanding walkers’ attention on each stage of the tour.

Many guide books recommend taking around 10-12 days to complete the circuit, however at the other end of the spectrum the inspirational competitors of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) typically complete the entire circuit in less than 24 hours.

Teaming up with my dad (Carl) and sister (Gabriella) we decided to trek the route in an anti-clockwise direction over six and a half days, starting in the idyllic village of Les Houches (Chamonix valley) the day after Kilian Jornet Burgada won the incredibly demanding UTMB in the phenomenal time of 20 hours 36 minutes.
