The Leith Hill Half
Mar 07, 2011
"Not the toughest, but tough enough" seems to be a fair reflection of my latest running encounter. The Trionium Leith Hill Half Marathon is an out and back course. The first half involved climbing to the top of Leith Hill, the highest point in southeastern England, negotiating a variety of sandy, muddy and rocky footpaths and bridleways before turning round and racing the 6.5 miles back down the hill...or so I foolishly thought. I was wrong! I soon realised that the second half wasn't all going to be down-hill. Feeling fresh at the turn around point I pushed pretty hard and was feeling strong moving in to the last two miles...however the last couple of miles were tough with a couple of steep climbs thrown in to finish the legs off before finally descending to the finish line.
This was my first competitive half marathon and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Fantastic scenery, extremely well organised, a great atmosphere and a lot of fun.
It was also great to bump in to an old school friend, Sam Jenkins, who is preparing for the London Marathon and ran a fantastic race.
Three things I loved about the Leith Hill Half
1. Singing the national anthem before the race started
2. Being given a carrot after the race
3. Watching the 'Wife Carrying' race
