Talk with Scout Troop

Talk with Scout Troop

I was delighted to be invited to give a talk to the 1stDanbury Scouts, St Cleres Scout Troop about my recent challenges and in particular rowing across the Atlantic.

It was great to have an opportunity to speak to so many enthusiastic youngsters who had such a passion for the outdoors and for adventure.

The aim of the talk was to share some of my experiences and hopefully instill a further sense of adventure in to the group of 10-15 year olds (and hopefully some of the Scout Leaders and parents). In contrast to previous talks this was much more interactive with lots of photos, videos and a chance for the Scouts to have a taste of some of the ration packs I took to sea.

There were many curious minds and following the talk I was faced with a barrage of brilliant questions, my favourite being;

        “Why is your beard so ginger?”

I didn't have a response and it’s a mystery that has perplexed me for the past eight years or so and I don't think I will ever know the answer.

At the end of the session when asked if anyone was interested in rowing an ocean there were about eight or nine who raised their hands immediately, including a group of four girls who wanted to form a team. This was great to see and there were also some who said that they didn't want to row an ocean but wanted to go and achieve something big.

I would like to thank everyone, in particular Tony Maltby and Clive Pretty, for inviting me and organising the evening. I had a fantastic time and I would love to return in the future to talk about my next adventures...

Hopefully there are a few future ocean rowers amongst you!
